About Dorothy

Dorothy Diggs graduated from the Downeast School of Massage in 1994 with an emphasis in Sports Massage. She is a Maine Licensed Massage Therapist and is Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB).  She is a professional member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) and active with the AMTA Maine Sports Massage Team. She is also a Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioner (CKTP) and Certified Infant Massage Instructor (CIMI) with the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM).

Dorothy specializes in offering therapeutic massage treatments tailored to suit your needs.  She combines Swedish, Sports and Russian Massage techniques with CORE Myofascial Therapy, Orthopedic Massage and deep tissue strokes to reduce tension, promote relaxation and enhance your general health and well being.  The massage treatments soothe general aches and pains, relieve tension from life’s stresses, enhance athletic performances, and reduce recovery time from workouts, injuries or repetitive movements by facilitating your body’s own healing process.

Having grown up with a family of artists and medical professionals, Dorothy combines her understanding of anatomy, physiology and kinesiology with her intuitive, creative and caring nature. She has also combined her training in massage therapy with an extensive background in athletics and coaching ice hockey. She first discovered the numerous benefits of massage therapy as she dealt with her own sore, strained and tired muscles as she learned to skate and play goalie at Colorado College.

A year after graduating, she became the head coach of the women’s ice hockey team at Cornell University.  She has also coached women’s and boys’ hockey teams at Portland High School, Bowdoin College and University of Southern Maine as well as at hockey camps across the United States, Canada and Sweden.

Since 1994, Dorothy has worked extensively with the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League, including many future stars of the NHL.  She has also provided pre- and post-event treatments to athletes at events such as the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, the 1999 Pan American Games, the Boston Marathon and Rippleffect Kayak Regattas.  She is an active member of the AMTA Maine Sports Massage Team that provides Sports Massage treatments to athletes at such events as the Beach to Beacon 10K, the Maine Marathon, and the Lobsterman, Urban Epic and Tri for a Cure Triathlons.

Dorothy operates her office, Massage Works, in the heart of Downtown Portland, Maine.
In 2009, she also joined the massage therapy team at Orthopedic Associates’ state of the art Performance Center in Saco, Maine.
